Jacob's eye surgery

JACOB SURGERY 7.24.2014
Jacob had strabismus surgery to straighten his eyes on July 24, 2014, a Thursday. Dad took the day off and we woke up super early to take him in. We all got up about 5:30, dad showered with him, and we got ready to go at six to be there by 6:30. We got there at 6:30 and checked in. Him and Katelyn just played with the toys and were just fine. They finally called us back about an hour later to get him ready. They checked all his weight and vitals and talked to us about the procedure. At that time it was getting close to 8. We changed him into his little hospital jammies and a little cap and he looked SOOOOOO cute. The cutest patient I ever did see.   His little cheeks  were so chubby looking and he was just smiling and talking cute. He was being silly and would pull his hospital cap over his face and laugh. Then they gave him some medicine to help calm him down before they took him back. That's why he started getting really silly, he mainly was talking baby talk to us and pushing us wish his hands and laughing. Then his eyes started getting tired looking and he would just want to lie down. So they took him back and he just lied down and watched toy story as they wheeled him off. Right after I watched my baby be taken away I could feel the emotions begin to rise and the tears well up in my eyes. I was so nervous for my baby and had a constant prayer in my heart that everything would be ok. In the surgery they would put him completely out with laughing gas and then insert an iv and a breathing tube to sustain his breathing. I was kind of freaked out about the tube, I didn't realize beforehand they would have to do that. So we waited, and waited, ate some breakfast, which I felt so bad for Jacob because he couldn't eat anything and woke up super hungry so I knew he would be so tired and cranky and hungry after the surgery. Finally they called his name from the waiting room. Doctor Goldblum came out and told me that the surgery had been successful. I was so happy. Next we would just need to wait outside until he started waking up and then we could go back. We waited for awhile, about 45 minutes if not longer, and I knew he was probably super tired and not wanting to wake up. Finally they came out and said he was waking up. I was not prepared to walk into what came next. I walked into his room and he was throwing his arms around everywhere and bleeding on his hands and eyes and screaming. I ran to his side and grabbed his arms and said "mama's here baby, I got you." I kept trying to reassure him, but he was so upset. He kept wanting to rub his eyes. They told me that while they were wrestling to keep his hands down he yanked his IV out. This kind of made me upset, but whatever, I couldn't do anything about it. So I took him off the bed and tried rocking him in the chair, he kept trying to open his eyes and he kept screaming and screaming and trying to rub his eyes. At this point I literally felt so troubled. I didn't know what to do for my baby. I just remember praying over and over for help from my Heavenly Father to heal my baby and take his pain away. I would gladly take his pain from him. It broke my heart so much to see him like this and in pain. He kept crying and his tears were red from blood. It scared me, I was nervous, I was stressed, I was sad, I was all kinds of emotional. I just kept rocking and holding my sweet baby in my arms, trying to calm him down and sing to him and remind him I was there for him. He would drink juice (He drank a TON!) and then cry and try to rub his eyes, then he would fall asleep for a minute and then cry and scream and try to break free from my grasp on his hands. I seriously felt so, so bad. I continued to pray and ask for help from Nicholas and he would try to hold him too every now and then. They finally gave him some Tylenol and he really calmed down. I knew he was in pain, even though they said it probably just bothered him. He finally fell asleep in my arms and just rested. We decided to go home. We took him in the car and he slept. When we got home he got pretty cranky again and would cry and cry and say his eyes hurt. He would say, "Mama help me! My eyes!" and that would just break my heart because I felt helpless. I would say, "I'm here baby, I'm going to help you, Mama is here for you." Finally three hours later we drove to the store to get ibuprofen for him and he was crying in the car and we finally gave him some. It helped him a bit but he would still say his eyes hurt him. That went on pretty much the whole day. He had little spurts of energy and enthusiasm and would get off the couch and blindly find Katelyn and grab her and laugh. Then he would start crying again saying his eyes hurt. For dinner he specifically requested, "Hot og, Izza, and oh oo the ark." (Hot dog, pizza, and go to the park.) He was so cute and excited about it. He ate his hotdog at the house. Finally towards the end of the day I asked him if he wanted to go outside. He said yes and seemed very happy about that. I was afraid he might start screaming and trying to rub his eyes, but the whole time he just sat happily in the stroller. I think the fresh air helped him and it felt good to be outside. He said he wanted to go to the park. He would talk to us and just keep his eyes closed the whole walk. We walked for about an hour as he rode in the stroller. We took him down the slide a couple of times and then went home. He slept great after that! He woke up a few times crying for mama, but he did pretty good.

Day After Surgery:
Jacob did really well the second day. He woke up smiling and waving, with his eyes closed saying "Hi mama" :) He was so cute. He still would not open his eyes, but he was pretty happy most of the day. He cried a few times throughout the day, but was fairly happy. He took a lot of naps. He liked walking around the house trying to find different things and reaching his hands out to find things. He would love finding Katelyn and grabbing her and laughing. He Slept so much better. He didn't have to take any pain medicine! We went to a friends house for dinner and swimming. He couldn't get in of course, but he was so sad he wanted to so bad. So we let him put his feet in and he loved that! He would just splash his feet and smile. By around 8:30 he just told mom "I want to go nigh night" So I lied him down on one of the patio chairs and he fell right asleep. I Love my little JJ.
Third day: Jacob finally opened his eyes today! We had to bribe him with a lot of candy, but I could tell he was so scared, poor baby. He started out just a little by little then by the time Katelyn and I got home from mani/pedis, which was about an hour long, he had them all the way open watching t.v. I know he was so happy to finally have them open! I'm so happy my baby can see again. His eyes on the inside are really, really red. We have to wash them every day. Like this morning they were glued shut with all the goop so I washed him down and do every morning. Love my little Jacob.

Here are a few pictures. These make me so sad so I only want to post one.

I mean, isn't that^^ just the cutest face you have ever seen?? I love him so much!!

And then this one just breaks my heart :( His lids were swollen for a few days. The left one was so bad it looked purple and like someone had punched him. He couldn't open it all the way because it was swollen. My poor baby.
He is doing so much better now though! His eyes look great and we are so thankful that every thing went well. I hope he doesn't need any more surgeries in the future. WE love our little Jacob! Such a tough boy!
This is him opening a package he got from his sweet cousins Leila and Tyler. It made him so incredibly happy! We are so grateful for all of our family and friends who were thinking of him during this time.

Brennan

This little man of mine is already SIX months old! I'll tell you, when you have a baby I think that's when time flies by the fastest. I look at this little guy and think,"Weren't you just born yesterday??" We love him so much! He is such a happy baby. He reminds me so much of his sister. Always smiling and just a calm, relaxed baby.
He is my slowest baby yet when it comes to developmental milestones. He's not crawling and he just started sitting :) I'm used to sitters at 4 or 5 months and crawlers at 5-6 months. I'll let him take his time though, he tries really hard. ;) He is SO cute! Seriously, I know I am his mom, but I think he (and all my babies to be honest) are the cutest babies on this planet. I squish and kiss them way too much.

A few things Brennan does:

-Sleeps through the night waking up once around 5 to eat.
-Sits up, but still falls over a lot. Over protective mom here prevents any ouchies though with a circle of pillows around him.
-Eats baby food
-Still nurses all day long. Woohoo! I'm so proud of myself if you can tell :)
-Grabs toys or anything else in his reach
-Eats puffs/yogurt melts
-Likes playing in his jumperoo
-And last but not least, smiles ALL. THE. TIME. Who doesn't love that? I sure do.

Here are some cute pictures of my little guy:

I love this picture, he looks So cute! Aw, love baby cheeks.

He's so funny, he likes to just sit there and suck on this spinner on his bouncer.
And here are all three of my beautiful babies. I couldn't be a prouder mama.
And other news, we almost won the BYU50 box the other day! I was so sad, I wanted to win it so, so bad. Oh well!

How are the Jensen's Doing!?

Thought I would update my blog. So one day my kids can read how crazy we all were :)

We haven't been up to too much lately. Mostly just watching little Brenny grow and enjoying the summer sun!

The kids are growing like weeds. Katelyn is starting pre-school in the fall and is SO ready for it. She seriously is such a smartie pants. She spells her name, Jacob's name, Dad, Mom, Bren, Isaac, Cat, Dog and I'm sure much more. She is reading with some help. She LOVES to draw. I can count on finding two or three new drawings from her every day. She is still her active little self, running and jumping all around the house.

Jacob is so sweet. He is such a funny kid. His speech has been a little slow, but he is talking so much lately! I love it. We just got him to pronounce his D for dadda, he was just saying ada before but now he will say the first sound and say DADA. I was freaking out a bit when he first said it and kept asking him to say it and I think that made him proud of himself. :) He is getting taller, his head now hits the bar when he walks past it. I remember Katelyn was just up to the bar when we first moved in just a year ago. Now she is far and beyond that, and Jacob is level with it, so they must both be growing!

Brennan is such a good baby!! He sleeps through the night now and hardly ever cries. He's the sweetest little boy ever. He just started rolling (4 months) I was so excited when I first notice him do it! I was doing the dishes and looked over at him and thought, "How did you get over there??" So I put him back on his belly and he just smiled at me like, "Look what I can do mom!" And rolled his little body over. I love when they start learning new things.

Nick is working hard and doing great! If you remember a couple of posts back I said it was really hard for me moving to Rio Rancho at first. I have grown to love it more and more. The people here are amazing! Probably the best ward we have had. My favorite neighbor just moved and I am so so sad :( She was so awesome and always taking care of me when we first moved in!

We blessed Brennan on Easter Sunday! It was wonderful!! My parents and bubba were able to come and Nicks parents as well. We really enjoyed them all being here. Look at that sweet boy! Such a happy face.

The other day I put some pants of Katelyn's on him and pulled them up really high. I thought he looked so cute hahah, love my lil Brenny.
This has been Katelyn's new thing lately. She takes Jacob outside and sprays him down with water and styles his hair. She reminds me of a little hairstylist, she loves it!
My kiddos, so sweet & so cute!! I just want to eat them all up.
Katelyn had her very first dance performance on May 31st! She did amazing and it was SOOO so fun to watch them. She was adorable on stage!

My beautiful ballerina. Her dress was soo gorgeous, but "super itchy" Katelyn would say :)

We went to Aunt Lulu's house over Memorial day! It was so fun!! Love Aunt Lulu!! And her kids, and Matt her husband ;) I seriously wish we lived right next door :( Miss my sister like crazy.

Me and the kiddos drinking smoothies one day. We all made smoothie mustaches. Brennan wanted some.

Brennan's blessing day with the grandparents!
Don't know if I ever posted these newborn pictures of him. He is such a cutie!!

 He was so little!!
 Love his little tongue

Brennan Kent Jensen

Our sweet little Brennan came into the world on
February 3, 2014 at 6:06 a.m.
Weight 5lb. 15 oz
Height 18.5 inches

He came exactly three weeks early at 37 weeks. Here is my story:
On Sunday morning, the 2nd of February, at about 4 a.m. I woke with contractions. I timed them and I was certain I was in labor and would be going to the hospital soon. I was only 36 weeks 6 days so I decided to take a bath to try and slow them down in case it was too early and because I didn't want to wake the kids up yet. They got to every five mins. apart so I got out and decided I had to go to the hospital. I hadn't woken even Nick up yet, but I just started getting ready to go. Then right after I got out of the bath and was getting ready I realized the contractions were gone. So that lasted for about an hour and a half. They just completely disappeared so I went back to bed. The whole day I would have like one contraction every hr. I didn't know what my body was doing and they weren't very painful so with out them being consistent I wasn't going to go into the hospital.

I went to bed that night still with nothing consistent, but I was thinking in my head, he's coming tonight, I know he's going to wake me up again in the middle of the night and this will be it. I told Nick and I think he believed me, but at the same time didn't worry about it.

Sure enough at three in the morning I woke up with two contractions ten mins apart that were very painful. I told Nick I had two contractions ten mins apart, but I know they were too painful to ignore so I got up. As soon as I got up that's when every thing just went fast. Right after standing I started having contractions every 2-3 mins and they were painful. I told Nick we had no time and had to leave NOW.

By the time we packed the kids bag, called my friend, got my stuff and left it was probably a little around 4 a.m. We dropped the kids off and poor Jacob was hysterical. I tried calming him down, but I told Nick I couldn't wait and I knew the contractions were too strong to wait around.

We drove to the hospital and Nick dropped me off at the emergency room entrance. I walked in and told them I was in labor and they told me where to go. I waited for Nick to park and we went up together. We checked in at triage and of course the nurse took her sweet time when I told her I had only been contracting for an hour and a half. She told me to get changed and wait for her. I did all that and was ready so fast, but she took her time. I told Nick to go get her because the contractions were so close and strong I was nervous how far along I was. Finally she came back and hooked me all up. She checked my cervix and told me I was at a 9. I think my heart almost stopped, then when I asked, "Will I have time for my epidural?" and she responded with a chuckle and said, "No"  I think then it really did stop for a minute. I immediately looked at Nick and said, "Nick I can't do this I need my epidural." I pretty much said that the whole time.

They tried explaining that I could get it but it wouldn't work in time. I kept saying I don't care just give it to me, but then the anesthesiologist just walked out of the room and they shut the doors and curtains and the nurse said, "Ok Dana let's do this, let's have this baby!" And I almost started crying then because I knew there would be no pain relief, I was going to have this baby right now whether I wanted to or not.

I kept looking at Nick saying things like, "Nick help me I can't do this" or "I'm gonna die, babe I think I'm gonna die." It's kind of funny now, but it wasn't then. Nick was SOOOO good. He held my hand tight the whole time and I squeezed the heck out of it. He kept telling me I was so strong and I could do it, that I was doing great. I really couldn't have made it through with out his support. I would just look at him, I'm sure with a look of terror on my face and keep saying, "I can't do this, I'm going to die." And he would just look back and encourage me.

Let's just say the next 35 mins were the hardest thing in my life. I can't really describe how I was feeling, I was so incredibly scared out of my mind to the point that I honestly didn't believe I would have the baby with out dying. I've since forgotten all the pain, but I often remind myself I never want to do that again :)

So about 35 mins of pushing and the little guy came out. I will say after going through all of that pain and fear, when I finally got him out I felt such a sense of accomplishment, I really wanted to hold him and I was so happy I did it. It's a different experience then just painlessly pushing out my other kids with an epidural. I really felt like I had done it this time all on my own and that I had been through one of the toughest things in my life for my baby who I loved so much. I feel happy that I got to experience it and it really makes me appreciate my kids even more.

Now with that being said, I will never wait to go to the hospital again, but we couldn't have really gone much faster than we did so I think it was going to happen either way.

I'm so happy to have this sweet little boy in my life. He is just a sweetheart and so calm. I couldn't be more blessed to have three happy healthy children and a loving and supportive husband.
